Lenten Program at St. Mary's on Sundays at 11:15AM

The season of Lent is a period of self-examination that prepares us for the joy of the resurrection. I invite you, therefore, to a series of forums to consider our mortality and its relationship to our resurrection.

On February 26, we will begin the journey by considering ‘the Spirituality of Dying’. The Book of Common Prayer describes the Burial Service as an “Easter Liturgy.” What does this mean? How does our experience with death and dying confirm or deny this statement? How do other cultures differ from our own views?

On March 4 we will tackle the physical process of dying. By talking about what actually happens to our bodies as we die, we will, hopefully demystify the reality of death. In this session we will also talk about palliative care and choices regarding continuing or ending medical treatment.

The topic for March 11 will be grief and the emotional toll of death on survivors. Grief is seen in myriad ways and lived out communally and individually. This session will cover theoretical models, medical studies, and personal experience.

Finally, on March 18, we will talk about planning a memorial service and the liturgical choices that shape a funeral. Rite I or Rite II? Hymns? Remembrances? There are many options in preparing for a service and each of them tells part of our story.

Please join me, so that, as we approach Easter and the Resurrection of our Lord, we might understand better how he transformed death, even our own.

Your Help is Needed for Books in South Africa!

My name is Megan Hughes, and I am a US Peace Corps Volunteer living in a rural village in South Africa. I have spent the last year and a half working at the primary and secondary schools in my village teaching English and science. While I face many challenges on a daily basis – cultural differences, language barriers, being the only white woman in a black community – one of the greatest challenges is teaching with minimal resources. The primary school where I work does not have a library, and while the secondary school does, the library is filled with current and old textbooks only; there are no novels, pleasure reading books, or even general reference books available. How are all these children supposed to learn to read, learn a new language, learn to love education, when they never get to experience the joys of reading? Moreover, reading, writing, speaking, and understanding English are fundamental skills these children will need to succeed as productive members of South African society.

So, I am writing to you to ask for your help. I’m working with nine other Peace Corps Volunteers in South Africa to raise money to get a 40ft. container shipment of books from the U.S.-based organization, Books for Africa, to South Africa for schools in the Limpopo and Mpumalanga Provinces. Our project, which we call Siphumelela (“We succeed”), will bring over 20,000 books, including storybooks, math books, science books, and English literacy books, for less than $1 per book. Each of us will bring 2,000 books back to our schools to set up libraries, introduce leisure reading, and supply teachers with material to enhance their lessons. At my primary school, I plan on creating “book boxes,” stored boxes of storybooks sorted by reading level that teachers can carry to their classes for lessons and pleasure reading. This allows for the books to be used by all learners and teachers without having to build a library. At my high school, I will be receiving both pleasure reading books and reference books, including a complete Compton’s by Britannica student edition encyclopaedia, a resource the librarian has been dreaming of for years.

To donate, follow this link to the Siphumelela Project on the Books for Africa website: https://www.booksforafrica.org/donate/to-project.html?projectId=98. Under “Additional Information,” please write that you heard about the project from me. Should you find any problems with the website, please let me know (mhughes@wesleyan.edu). (Please note: when you click on the link - it takes a moment before going through).

Please remember, every little bit counts: a donation of $10 will buy about 12 books! Thanks for your time, and I hope you can make a contribution.

Megan

Icon Painting Workshop for Lent

As a prayer experience, I would like to invite a group of 5 to 6 people to gather at St. Mary's during the five Saturdays in March in order to paint the icon of Christ the Bridegroom. (Everything about painting an icon is pre-scripted so you do not need to be an artist as each step is laid out; so, be not afraid!).

The time slot that I would prefer is Saturday mornings from 9-12. Other times might be arranged if this schedule does not work.

The cost for gold leaf has skyrocketed recently but $30 per person would cover the gold, paint, and icon board. I hope that you are able to join in as I am looking forward to sharing this wonderful prayer-form with you.

Peace,

Michael

Ash Wednesday Services - February 22 - 9:30 a.m. & 7:30 p.m.

Ash Wednesday liturgy includes an invitation to the 'observance of a holy Lent, by self-examination and repentance; by prayer, fasting, and self-denial; and by reading and meditating on God's holy Word.' To that end, this Lenten season we are offering a number of opportunities to enrich the Lenten journey.

Please join us at either the 9:30 a.m. or 7:30 p.m. service for the imposition of ashes and simple Eucharist. On this first day of Lent, we invite you to a season of introspection and prayer.

Pat Warner Celebrated in "Cheers for Volunteers"

Our own Pat Warner was recently celebrated in The Enterprise "Cheers for Volunteers" feature. The link is no longer working, but below are a few quotes from the archived article:

"Volunteering at Fuller Craft Museum has been a wonderful experience for me. I have been able to actively work on exhibitions, collections, and even put my filing skills to use. My resume is increasing day by day and that with someone who is well beyond retirement age. No two days are the same." - Pat Warner

"Some volunteers contribute more than their time and energy to the museum. Pat Warner imbues the administrative offices with a generous spirit, uplifting us with her purpose, grace, and tireless dedication. To many of the staff at Fuller Craft, she is a beacon, a voice of clarity - always willing to go above and beyond, to treat each challenge with ingenuity, good reason, and a genuine love for the museum. She is a beloved member of our museum community." - Wyona Lynch-McWhite executive director
