Father Julio Rivera Visit on Sunday, September 30
Please join us this Sunday for a special visit from the rector of our sister parish in El Salvador. St. Mary’s and Santa Maria Virgen, located in a neighborhood outside the capital city of San Salvador, have a historic relationship dating back nearly 20 years. St. Mary’s previous rector, Larry Walton, was also a Central American missionary who served as rector of Santa Maria Virgen for several years in the 1990s. This Sunday will be the first time a rector from Santa Maria Virgen has visited St. Mary’s.

For more background on Santa Maria Virgen, please visit our website here.

Night Prayer at Parish of the Messiah

Our neighbor Episcopal Parish of the Messiah in Auburndale has a monthly "Night Prayer" service on the first Sunday of the month at 8:30pm. More information is available at http://nightprayer.org/inside.html.

Also, singers of any faith are invited to audition for Schola Nocturna, a small mixed ensemble that sings Night Prayer at the Episcopal Parish of the Messiah in Auburndale (Newton) on the first Sunday of each month at 8:30 PM. This liturgy is based on the ancient monastic office of Compline. Now entering our third season, Schola Nocturna has about twenty members from metropolitan Boston, the North Shore, and the South Shore. In this season we will also be exploring and hopefully launching a program that brings the mystical power of chant to hospitals and other health care settings.

Schola members learn to read original chant notation and become conversant with performance practice. Literature includes Byzantine, Mozarabic, Ambrosian and Gregorian chant, as well as chant from the Liber Usualis, the Sarum Graduale, and the Symphonia of Hildegard von Bingen. In addition, contemporary chant composed by Daryl Bichel, Music Minister at the church, and Renaissance polyphonic choral literature are performed.

Rehearsals are held on the two Saturdays prior to the first Sunday of the month from 10 AM - noon, and on the evening of Night Prayer from 6:30 - 9 PM. Amelia LeClair is the director. For further information and an audition, contact Daryl Bichel at 617.312.8328, darylbichel@aol.com.

On Sunday September 16, Paul Pyzowski gave an adult forum on his trip to El Salvador this past summer, discussing the Anglican Church in El Salvador, a road construction project he participated in, and his visit to St. Mary's sister parish outside of the capital city of San Salvador. A detailed description of his trip, as related in the Diocesan newsletter, can be found here.

The presentation slides can be viewed here.
